5 Signs Your Water Heater Is About to Fail

A water heater rarely dies without warning. Catch these five signs early and you can replace it on your schedule instead of during a cold, flooded morning.

Nobody wants to find out their water heater is done at 6 a.m. with a cold shower and a puddle on the garage floor. The good news: they almost always warn you first. Here are the five signs we tell every homeowner to watch for.

1. Your hot water runs out fast, or runs rusty

Less hot water than you used to get, or water that comes out tinted brown or orange, usually means sediment buildup or a tank that is corroding from the inside.

2. Popping or rumbling sounds

That is hardened sediment at the bottom of the tank - a direct result of our hard water. It makes the heater work harder and shortens its life.

3. Water pooling around the base

Any moisture around the tank is a red flag. A cracked tank cannot be repaired, only replaced, and it will not fix itself.

4. The heater is more than 8 to 10 years old

That is the typical lifespan of a tank heater - and hard water tends to pull it toward the short end of that range.

5. Rising energy bills

A heater fighting through sediment burns more energy to do the same job. A creeping gas or electric bill can be the first quiet sign.
